Tom Saxhaug (born February 22, 1948) is a
Minnesota
politician and a member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 3,
which includes portions of Aitkin
, Itasca
, Koochiching
and Lake of the Woods
counties in the northern part of the state.
A
Democrat,
he was first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.
Saxhaug is a member of the Senate's Education Committee and
Environment and Natural Resources Committee. He also serves on the
Environment and Natural Resources subcommittees for Forestry (which
he chairs) and for Public Lands and Waters, and on the Finance
subcommittees for the E-12 Education Budget and Policy Division,
the Economic Development and Housing Budget Division, the
Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Budget Division, and the
Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Budget Division-Natural
Resources (which he also chairs).
Saxhaug
completed his secondary education at Grand Rapids High School in
Grand
Rapids
and later received a B.A. from St. Olaf College
in Northfield
. Prior to his election to the Senate, he
served on the Grand Rapids City Council from 1995-1997, and was an
Itasca County Commissioner from 1997-2003. He and his wife, Nancy,
have two children.
