Tony Takitani (トニー滝谷) is a 2004 Japanesemarker film directed by Jun Ichikawa, based upon the short story by Haruki Murakami.


Haruki Murakami was intrigued by the name Tony Takitani when, at a garage sale on Mauimarker, he found a yellow T-shirt that said, "Tony Takitani, House (D)."

At the time, Takitani was running for office. Murakami decided to write the man's life story as this novel.

Plot summary

Tony Takitani, a technical illustrator, meets, falls in love with, and marries a woman who is obsessed with shopping for clothes and accessories. When she dies suddenly, he is completely distraught and sets about hiring a woman as an assistant, with the one primary condition being that she should wear his wife's clothes to work. However, after the final job interview, he changes his mind and sells the clothes instead, realizing that he is destined to spend the rest of his life alone.



The soundtrack for the film was entirely composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
