The University of Illinois Press (UIP), is a major Americanmarker university press and part of the University of Illinoismarker.

According to the UIP's website:
The University of Illinois Press was established in 1918 as a not-for-profit scholarly publisher at the University. We became one of the founding members of the Association of American University Presses in 1937 and now rank as one of the country's larger and most distinguished university presses. We publish works of high quality for scholars, students, and the citizens of the state and beyond. Our headquarters are in Champaignmarker, and we market and distribute our books worldwide. With a local staff of forty-six we bring out about 120 books each year, as well as 26 journals. As you know if you've had a chance to look through our seasonal catalogs, which come out in the spring and fall of each year, we are especially strong in certain key areas. These include African-American studies, American history, American music, anthropology and archaeology, ethnic and immigration history, fiction and poetry, folklore, Judaica and Holocaust studies, labor history, literature, Mormon studies, music studies, religion, social history, and women's studies.

In addition to its own publications, the UIP collaborates with and acts as a distributor for various other institutions and publishing companies, including the Art Institute of Chicagomarker, OV Books and Power Publications at the University of Sydney.

Mission statement

The UIP's mission statement is stated on their website as follows:

The University of Illinois Press is the center of scholarly publishing expertise for the University of Illinois. The quality of the Press derives from five principles:
# The Press is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of scholarship. In order to maintain a distinguished publishing program, the Press needs to have ready access to the intelligence, education, judgment, and trust of scholars. The Press must thus be attentive to its own intelligence, education, judgment, and reliability.
# Scholarly publishing is competitive. The leadership of the University of Illinois Press must know the persons, professions, practices, laws, measures, and dynamics of competition in multiple marketplaces. The Press must maintain a strong grasp of finances in order to optimize income, minimize costs, and manage growth.
# Press expertise includes the arts, skills, history, and traditions of scholarly publishing, especially university press publishing. It includes attention to current trends and business practices, as well as careful assessment and adaptation of emerging disciplines, technologies, and opportunities.
# The Press represents the University of Illinois.
# The Press represents the state of Illinois.
The Press seeks to promote and achieve excellence in all five areas and thus contribute directly to the excellence of scholarly publishing, the University of Illinois, the citizens of Illinois, and readers throughout the world.
