The Usher of the Black Rod of the Senate of Canada (often shortened to Black Rod) is the most senior protocol position in the Parliament of Canadamarker.The name Usher of the Black Rod comes from the ebony cane carried by the Usher of the Black Rod as symbol of authority.The Usher of the Black Rod is a floor officer of the Senate and is responsible for security in the Senate Chamber. The Black Rod also leads the daily Speaker's Parade to and from the Senate Chamber.

The office is modelled on the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod of the House of Lordsmarker of the Parliament of the United Kingdommarker.Black Rod leads the Speaker's Parade at the beginning of each sitting of the Senate and oversees protocol, administrative and logistical details of important events taking place on Parliament Hillmarker, such as the opening of Parliament and Speech from the Throne ceremonies.

The Usher of the Black Rod carries out a 600 year old parliamentary tradition as the personal attendant and messenger of the Sovereign or Her Representative when either person is in Parliament.The Usher directs all protocol, logistical and administrative details regarding openings of Parliament, including the Speech from the Throne ceremony and acts as coordinator of ceremonial and protocol details related to State Funerals and the Investiture of a Governor General in the Senate and carries out ceremonial duties related to Royal Assent of bills.He is a member of the Welcoming Party for all visiting Heads of State and Heads of Government.

In addition to the ceremonial duties, the Usher of the Black Rod is a member of the senior management team of the Senate administration and is responsible for the Page Program.

Upon the appointment of the first woman to the position of "Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod" on October 20, 1997, the title was changed to "Usher of the Black Rod".

Kevin S. MacLeod, CVO, CD, Chief of Protocol in the Department of Canadian Heritage, was appointed Black Rod on March 27, 2008 effective May 26, 2008.
