Dr. M. Varadarasan (Tamil: மு. வரதராசன், April 25, 1912 - October 10, 1974) was an erudite scholar in Tamil language and literature. He was popularly known as Mu.Va and Varatharasanar.

Birth

Dr. M. Varadarasanar was born at Velam near Sholinghur, Vellore in Vellore districtmarker on 25.4.1912.

Education and Profession

Varadarasanar did his schooling at Tirupathur high school and became a Tamil pandit in 1935. He was the first person to do doctorate in Tamil Literature at Madras University in 1948. He served as a Tamil professor in Chennai Pachaiyappa's College. Then he became the Head of Department, Tamil in Madras University in 1961. Finally he was the Vice Chancellor of Madurai University. He was the first Tamil Scholar to get a D.Lit., in the American University in 1972.

Literary works

Dr. M. Varadarasanar had made a tremendous contribution towards Tamil Literature during 20 th century. He had written many Novels, short stories, fictional stories, plays, travelogue, English translations, Biographs. He was one among those few scholars, who could enjoy reading the entire gamut of Tamil literature: the ancient, the medieval and the modern periods. Such a scholar has written A History of Tamil Literature (Tamil Ilakkiya Varalaru) in his own inimitable style. Some of his popular literary works include:

  • Agal vilakku
  • Nenjil oru mul
  • Kariththundu
He received the Sahitya Academy award for his novel Agal vilakku

The eminent scholar and professor of Tamil expired on 10/10/1974.
