Bus services

History

The origins of the company that is now Veolia Transport NSW can be traced back to 1935 when motor-bus services began to operate between Sutherland Stationmarker and Woronora River. Following the opening of the Alfords Point Bridge in 1973, a variety of routes were operating, including extensions to Padstow stationmarker. The service was known as Menai Bus Service, and buses carried a white and green livery. In 1988, the company was sold to Ron Deane, who was already operating buses on the North Shore, and was re-named Deanes Coaches. Buses were repainted white with yellow, blue and orange stripes. In 1988, the company expanded with the purchase of part of the old route 88 from Peakhurst Coaches, and the purchase of Hadfields at Engadinemarker. The company was renamed Southtrans when these companies were purchased. Other bus companies were acquired in the 1990s, such as Buslines, Sutherland Bus Service and Carss' Park Chartered Tours. In 1999, the company was sold to Connex and renamed Connex Southtrans. Buses carried a white livery with a yellow front. Pioneer Coaches, Crossley Bus Lines and Baxters Bus Lines' Fairfield East depot operations were later acquired. In 2006, the company was renamed Veolia Transport NSW as part of a global corporate re-branding exercise. The livery changed to all-white. On 1 February 2007, Transit First was sold to Veolia Transport NSW, with the sale including 86 buses, 15 routes, and the lease on the current Bankstown Airport depot. On 1 January 2009, Veolia purchased Crowthers, and took over operation of their routes in the Sutherland Shire.

Current operations

Veolia Transport NSW operates 53 bus routes from bus depots at Taren Pointmarker, Menaimarker and Revesbymarker serving the southern Sydney (Region 10), and Bankstown Airportmarker and Villawoodmarker serving Region 13. It has a fleet of 264 buses. It operates three of Sydney's first new strategic bus corridors, between Hurstvillemarker and Mirandamarker (routes 970 and 971), between Bankstownmarker and Parramattamarker (route 910), and between Liverpoolmarker and Burwoodmarker (route 900). In 2006, Veolia took over operation of the N70 nightride bus. Region 13 routes underwent a reorganisation and simplification which were effective as of September 18, 2006. School services and charters are also a large part of their business. Veolia Transport NSW currently operate 264 buses.

After the 2006 reorganisation and simplification of Region 10 bus routes, on November 19, 2007, many of the altered bus routes were restored to their original state due to a severe decline in passenger numbers and high levels of passenger complaints. The idea to make bus services "straighter" did not have a welcome reception with passengers of whom preferred convenience as opposed to speed on shorter routes.

On 9 January 2007 it was announced that Veolia had purchased the operations of Sydney bus company Transit First[307234]. The handover took place on 1 February 2007.
