Virudhunagar is a municipality in Virudhunagar district of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu
.In the beginning of 20th century A.D., Virudhupatti
was one among the six important places of Ramanathapuram
District. Due to the rapid growth in the field of Trade and
Education, it was renamed as 'Virudhunagar' on 29 October 1923. The
term 'Virudhu' means 'Award' in Tamil.Virudhunagar is very famous
for business. Virudhunagar does not produce anything but exports
everything. It is a business hub like Singapore. All agriculture
products like chilli,sesame are brought to Virudhunagar to sell and
all buyers come to Virudhunagar to buy. Thus, got a saying
"Virudhunagar does not produce anything but Export everything."

Thiruppugal Swami - Muthia Nadar of Kattunayakkanpatti, Kovilpatti
Taluq who settled in Virudhunagar 2 centuries ago established
worship centres at Virudhunagar and Kattunayakkanpatti. He is
believed to have blessed the town for all around welfare town. It
is believed that the famous Tamil chants Aaho Aiyaho during Amman
temples were introduced by Thiruppughal swami.

census, Virudhunagar had a
population of 73,003. Males constitute 50% of the population and
females 50%. Virudhunagar has an average literacy rate of 80%,
higher than the national average of 59.5%. male literacy is 84%,
and female literacy is 76%. In Virudhunagar, 10% of the population
is under 6 years of age.
