Vivek Anand Oberoi or Viveik Oberoi ( ), ( ) (born 3 September 1976) is a Bollywood actor. He is the son of Bollywood actor Suresh Oberoi.

Early life and background

Vivek Oberoi was born on the 3rd of September,1976 in Hyderabad to the actor Suresh Oberoi . He attended Mayo college in Ajmermarker. At an actors' workshop in London he was spotted by none other than the director of NYU who (unsurprisingly) whisked Vivek off to New York (New York University), where he completed his Masters Degree in film acting. Back home in India Vivek worked as scriptwriter and bought his first car with the money he made from that.

But the charmer's big break came when noted filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma offered Vivek a role in his gangster flick, Company (2002). Quite an unusual entrance for a debutant in Bollywood, because the norm for young actors is to play good lover boys till their place in Filmdom is secure. Not Vivek. Apparently, Ram Gopal Varma was having second thoughts about casting Vivek in Company because he thought Vivek looked too cute for a gangster - and told him so. Vivek, not to be outdone, went to the slums of Mumbai and did his homework and a couple of weeks later barged into Varma's office dressed as Chandu the gangster, swung his feet up on the table, and landed the contract pronto.

From there the road went uphill. Vivek's immaculate performance in Company - in which he starred opposite Bollywood Big Bad Boy Ajay Devgan, Miss Bolly Manisha Koirala and the granddaddy of Malayalam Cinema, Mohanlal - was more than enough to get the media singing Oberoi's praises. Next in line was the psycho-thriller Road (2002) (opposite Company co-star and co-newcomer Antara Mali), Dum (2003) (which sank without a trace - opposite Diya Mirza) and the next big catch, Saathiya (2002), opposite Rani Mukherjee.

He was engaged to, and then broke up with longtime girlfriend Gurpreet. He was linked with Aishwarya Rai. He had gotten himself into the headlines for a public outburst (i.e. press conference) against Salman Khan.

Career

Vivek Oberoi made his debut in Ram Gopal Varma's Company. The film was a critically acclaimed hit. He received Filmfare Awards for the Best Debut as well as the Best Supporting Actor categories. He then starred in the action films, Road and Dum.

He starred alongside Rani Mukerji in Yash Raj Films Saathiya (2002) directed by Shaad Ali. The film was critically and commercially successful and Vivek gained many accolades. He received Best Actor nominations at various award functions. He also starred in the comic film Masti (2004) along with Aftab Shivdasani and Ritesh Deshmukh. The film was a surprise box office hit, though negatively reviewed. He also starred in the critically acclaimed film Yuva. His 2005 release Kaal (2005) was also successful.

In 2006, he appeared in Omkara an adaptation of Shakespeare's play Othello. This movie was critically acclaimed in India as well as overseas. He played the character of Kesu based on the character Michael Cassio in the original play.

In 2007, he won acclaim for his role as the gangster Maya Dolas in the multi-starred Shootout at Lokhandwalawhich was a both critically and commercially successful. Vivek got Star of the Year Awards for Shootout at Lokhandwala, in Stardust Awards from his father Suresh Oberoi(for first time). Vivek Oberoi was also awarded the Best Villain Award at the IIFA Awards for Shootout at Lokhandwala.

In 2008, Vivek Oberoi starred in a film called Mission Istanbul which was directed by Apoorva Lakhia and produced by Ekta Kapoor. They also happened to be shooting together for the 2007 film Shootout at Lokhandwala. Vivek first film in the year 2008, Mission Istanbul was declared average while getting 55%-65% of viewers to watch it.

In 2009 January, Vivek made a guest appearance in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance. He then co-starred alongside Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Kurbaan which was released on 20 November 2009. Kurbaan, directed by Rensil Rensil D'Silva and produced by Karan Johar is not going well with the audiences as expected but Vivek is gaining praise for his fine performance.

Vivek Oberoi has two films lining up for release in 2010. He will play a big time thief in Prince - It's Showtime, directed by Kookie V Gulati. Vivek will also play the lead role in Rakta Charitra, directed by his mentor Ram Gopal Varma. His role in the film is inspired on the life and death of controversial Andhra politician Paritala Ravindra. Tamil actor Surya Sivakumar will also play an important role in the film.

Vivek also performed the song "Apun Ke Saath" from the Mission Istanbul soundtrack, live at the 2008 IIFA awards in Bangkok. The track was produced by North American producer Vikas Kohli at Fatlabs studio.

According to a blog post on his website Vivek Oberoi has turned Vegeterian . He launched his official website www.vivek-oberoi.com during his birthday celebrations with children in Vrindavan.
