Warneton (in Dutch Waasten, in Picard Varnetån or Warneuton) is part of the Belgian town of Comines-Warnetonmarker in Walloniamarker in the province of Hainautmarker. It was a commune of its own until the 1977 merger of Belgian communes.

Etymology

1007 Uuarnasthun, 1065 Uuarnestun, 1104 Guarnestun

Farm (Saxon thun, Germanic *tûna « enclos ») of Warin, Saxon and Frankish anthroponym (Saxon settlement set up in the Merovingian era).

History

Cut away from Ploegsteertmarker in 1850, it was transferred from the province of West Flandersmarker to the province of Hainautmarker, in 1963. Since that date its minority Dutch-speaking inhabitants have benefitted from language facilities.
