Westmead Railway Station
Westmead is a railway station on the
Western and
Cumberland railway lines of
the
CityRail network.
It serves a well
established residential area, nearby major hospitals (Westmead
Hospital
and the
Children's Hospital at Westmead
) and local educational institutions including the
University of Western
Sydney and Westmead Teaching Hospital. It has four
tracks and two
island platforms.
Each island platform serves trains of the same direction.
Immediately east of Westmead, the '
Up Main' track passes under
the 'Up and
Down West
Suburban' tracks, so that east of Westmead, tracks are arranged
'Up/Down/Up/Down' and west of Westmead they are arranged
'Up/Up/Down/Down'. Also east of Westmead,
points allow trains to cross between 'Main'
(fast) and 'Suburban' (slow) tracks.
Between 1922 and 1932, the
Rogans Hill railway line
branched from the
Main West line
immediately west of Westmead station.
